Feira de Sao Martinho-Portimao

Dating back to 1662 when a guy called Martinhoshared his cape with a beggar in a snowstorm, the Sao Martinho Fair is Portimaos oldest event. Traditionally a fair to taste the new wine and celebrate the chestnut harvest. Nowadays, all sort of foods, plastic toys and rides have taken over the fairground. But you still see everywhere these days locals selling roasted chestnuts, and they are yammie!!!

International Business Drink, meet other business people from different natinalities established in the Algarve.

The British-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce, in association with the Dutch-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and the French-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is organising its next International Business Drink on November 15 at the Foyer of Teatro das Figuras, the municipal theatre in Faro, from 6pm to 8.30pm

During the event, the Teatro das Figuras team is also offering all participants a free guided tour through the backstage of the theatre, so they can find out more about “how the magic we see on stage is handled behind the curtains, away from the public’s eyes”.

The International Business Drink is a business networking event in an informal setting and aims to encourage the exchange of contacts between businesspeople from different nationalities established in the Algarve.

The event usually brings together representatives of all Chambers of Commerce involved, as well as a diverse set of companies from different fields of activity.

Participation in the event is free, with all the catering being sponsored by Teatro das Figuras, but registration is mandatory (before November 11) as places are limited to 60 people and bookings will be accepted on first come first serve basis.

Rotary Christmas market, get your christmas pressies early this year!

19/20 November

The very popular annual Rotary E-Club Porches International Christmas Market has moved to Centro de Congressos do Arade, in Ferragudo, during the weekend of 19-20 November, 2016.

Sponsored by Turismo do Portugal, and the Lagoa Câmara; it will be the biggest Christmas market ever. With nearly 100 vendors, you can get everything you need to be ready for Christmas, from gifts and cards to decorations, gourmet treats and clothing. You can even get a freshly cut Christmas tree.

The market will be open both days from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm.

The market is located on the main road into Ferragudo from the N125 at the Estômbar/Ferragudo intersection, inside the bright Arade Pavilion, so everything is under cover and there is no reason to worry about the weather; there is also plenty of parking.

Why not come for lunch? The market is offering catered Indian food, tapas and wine, and freshly-prepared, hot Dutch pancakes in addition to the more traditional sausages and glühwein.

Rotary E-club Porches has a € 5000 project to provide much-needed equipment to the LAR São José in Ferragudo. Its residents and daytime clients will receive many items needed to make the facility more ‘like home’. It is planned that proceeds from the market will complete this project.

End Polio now!

Charity cycle ride up Cerro de Sao Miguel arranged by Rotary Club Estoi Palace International.

Sixty years ago polio was one of the most feared diseases in the developed world, killing hundreds of children in the UK each year and leaving thousands paralysed. There is no cure for polio, it can only be prevented. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, can protect a child for life.

Since 1979 when Rotary began its first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines Rotary polio cases have reduced by 99.9 percent worldwide from 350,000 cases in 1988 to 94 in 2015. Working with various partners including the WHO and the Bill Gates Foundation we are very close to eradicating polio, but continued global immunization is vital to succeed.

As long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio. Failure to eradicate polio from these last remaining strongholds could result in as many as 200,000 new cases every year, within 10 years, all over the world.
Because of this global effort most countries have now expanded their capacity to tackle other infectious diseases by building effective surveillance and immunization systems.

The ride will be organised by Activity Bike Rides,  and will start from Estoi Palace Pousada at 9.30 and will take about 3 hours. The ride is around 35 kms and quite challenging as it includes cycling up to the top of Serra Sao Miguel.

If you would like to take part, sponsor a rider or just donate please contact shirley@rotaryestoipalace.org or ring 936 933 799. All donations will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill Gates Foundation.
